a visual ode for a mother

Around this time last year, I had the privilege of creating a logo for a coffee shop called “Te Amo.”

The name itself already feels heartwarming, but even more so when they told me they wanted their visual identity to be a tribute to their inspiration—their mom.

With that in mind, I got to sketching…hearts, houses, female silhouettes, cursive type, the whole Hallmark works. (Too bad I threw out the papers where I sketched those initial ideas.)

But as I went on, this became the final 3 logo design studies I presented them:

I enjoyed experimenting with a circular logo, an organic shape, and a symmetrical one. I was rooting for the middle one to be picked as the final logo, because it was my first time to create something using shapes! I had so much fun!

…but they decided on the classic route: the third option. A serif with flourishes, coffee beans, a kiss from a mama, the top view of a cup. These are the images I considered when I put them together into this logo design.

One of the reasons why I love working on logo design is getting to know the story, the motivations and inspirations of the people running the business. Hearing their whys, their hopes and dreams. And the opportunity to help bring their ideas to life through graphic design is a task that I am grateful I get to do.

Design really is the magic of telling stories in a thoughtful way.
